The End of Oak Street Is the Pick of the Week

After a decade of cinemas being dominated by superheroes, the movies finally seem to be healing. We’re getting lots of different types of movies again. Two low-budget horror movies did big business this year. A crowd-pleasing sci-fi adventure became a huge hit this spring. Currently, a documentary is doing very well. I love that.

I remember going to the movies as a 20-something in the 1990s and having so many different choices of what to watch. Who knows what next year will bring, but I surely hope we’ll keep getting lots of variety.

The End of Oak Street did not do all that well this summer, which is too bad because it got good reviews and looks like a lot of fun. Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor star in this David Robert Mitchell-directed adventure story about a family whose entire neighborhood gets transported to a land filled with dinosaurs. The trailers make it look like a film that might have come out in the 1990s from Amblin Pictures. Which is complimentary.

Can we have more of that, please, Hollywood? I have not seen the film, but I’m excited to give it a watch and happily make it this week’s pick. Also out this week that looks interesting:

K-Pop Demon Hunters: A world-renowned Korean pop group fights demons in their spare time. This got surprisingly great reviews and is now being released by the Criterion Collection.

The Uprising: Andrew Garfield stars in this Peter Greengrass-directed telling of the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381, which helped end serfdom in England. Weird that this is the first time I’m hearing about this film.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power – Season Two: They say this is the most expensive television series ever made. I never see anyone talking about it. Based on some of the appendices from the Lord of the Rings books, this series takes place thousands of years before the events of those books during Middle-earth’s Second Age. It honestly sounds cool, and I keep meaning to check it out. I’m glad something from Amazon is getting a physical release.

Game of Thrones: The Complete Collection: This once beloved series seems to have been mostly forgotten after its absolutely terrible final season. But if you are a fan, the complete series is getting a nice-looking steelbook boxed set just in time for its 15th anniversary.

Gone with the Wind: The classic is finally getting a UHD release.
