Almost a year ago to the day, I made Ash vs Evil Dead: The Complete First Season my Pick of the Week. I noted then my great fondness for the Evil Dead movies and my great excitement over the new series. I also noted that by the time the Blu-ray was hitting the store shelves I’d not yet seen the entire series.
Well, Season 2 has now hit the shelves and while I’ve watched a few more episodes of Season 1, I’ve still not made it all the way through. I like the show, I really do. It is a great deal of fun. But it’s kind of like when that band you really loved back in the day gets back together. It’s great to hear the old songs again and the new ones aren’t half bad, but it’s never really quite the same. Ash vs Evil Dead hits a lot of the notes I want them to hit. It’s got a great blend of horror and comedy. The new characters are interesting and the story is good. But it’s never going to be Evil Dead 2 no matter how hard it tries.
None of this is really bad. It is what it is and I’m so very happy it’s there. I will definitely be remedying my lack of watching the show. Soon, I hope. It’s just one of those thing where the TV landscape is so utterly filled with great stuff that the really great stuff is perpetually pushing out the really good stuff.
So yeah, Ash vs Evil Dead: The Complete Second Season is coming out this week on Blu-ray. You should totally check it out.

Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2: Though it is not nearly as entertaining as the first one, there is still plenty to enjoy in this sequel.
Supergirl: The Complete Second Season: The transition of this superhero series from CBS to The CW has mostly been a good one. It’s mostly smoothed out its story problems and the character developments have largely been meaningful ones. However it has gained The CW’s network-wide problem of creating far too much relationship melodrama. There are large chunks of some episodes where I just want to fast forward past all that junk and get to where Supergirl punches something.
The Walking Dead: The Complete Seventh Season: I gave up on this shows several seasons ago. I wanted to love it but I never more than kind-of liked it. Too much inter-personal drama, not enough brain eating. Too much wheel spinning, not enough action. I keep thinking someday I’ll return to it, but that day never seems to come.
Sid & Nancy (Criterion Collection): The story of one Sex Pistol’s tumultuous relationship with his girlfriend gets the Criterion treatment.
The Slayer: Arrow Video has brought this previously impossible to find ’80s slasher film to Blu-ray with their usual panache. I’ll have a full review up soon.
Society: Another ’80s horror flick gets the Arrow Treatment. This time in a limited edition Steelbook. The story’s pretty dumb, but its got some great practical effects from “Screaming” Mad George. You can read my full review.
La Poison (Criterion Collection): French film from 1951 about a husband and wife who hate each other. When the husband learns of a defense lawyer who never loses, he makes a visitation to see how he can kill his wife and get away with it.
Daredevil: The Complete Second Season/Jessica Jones: The Complete First Season: Just as The Defenders drops on Netflix, a couple of their previous shows come out on Blu-ray.
The Love of a Woman: Arrow Academy release of Jean Gremillon’s last film. It’s about a female doctor who moves to a small island off the coast of France. I’m about halfway through it so expect a review soon.
Variete/Beggars of Life: Kino Lober continues to release classic silent films on Blu-ray. Maybe one of these days I’ll bite the bullet and learn to watch the earliest films of cinema.
Lucifer: The Complete Second Season: Based on the comic series, this FOX show is about how Lucifer gets bored of being the Lord of Hell and instead decides to live a hedonistic life in Los Angeles.
