TCM Announces July Lineup Featuring American Indies, John Carpenter and Singers in Film

In recognition of Independence Day, TCM Spotlight: American Independents traces the evolution of American independent filmmaking through a collection of groundbreaking films made outside the traditional Hollywood studio system. Beginning with Oscar Micheaux: The Superhero of Black Filmmaking (2021), the series highlights pioneering artists and maverick filmmakers whose visions helped reshape the landscape of American movies. The lineup includes landmark works from Oscar Micheaux, Howard Hughes, Ida Lupino, Ed Wood, George A. Romero, Melvin Van Peebles, John Waters, John Cassavetes, Jim Jarmusch, Charles Burnett, Julie Dash and David Lynch, showcasing the creativity, innovation and risk-taking that have defined American independent filmmaking across generations.

TCM also presents The Carpenter Zone, a two-night programming event curated and co-hosted by legendary filmmaker John Carpenter. Showcasing science-fiction and horror classics that helped inspire one of the genre’s most influential directors, the lineup includes The Quatermass Xperiment (1955), Them! (1954), It! The Terror from Beyond Space (1958), The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), The Mummy (1959) and Curse of the Demon (1957). Throughout the event, Carpenter will share introductions and commentary on the films that helped shape his lifelong love of genre filmmaking.

Rounding out the month’s highlights, July’s Star of the Month, Singers as Stars, spotlights performers whose talents extended far beyond the recording studio. Highlights include New Orleans (1947) featuring Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong, Elvis Presley’s iconic Jailhouse Rock (1957), Barbra Streisand’s Oscar-winning turn in A Star Is Born (1976), Dolly Parton’s big-screen breakthrough in Nine to Five (1980), Cher’s Academy Award-winning performance in Moonstruck (1987), and David Bowie in Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983). Spanning musicals, dramas, comedies and cult favorites, the lineup celebrates musicians who successfully made the transition to movie stardom while leaving a lasting mark on Hollywood history.
