San Diego Comic-Con 2024: Saturday Preview

San Diego Comic Con returns to the San Diego Convention Center and surrounding area. Saturday’s programming schedule has been revealed and a couple Sentries who are attending will be sharing their thoughts on the panels they hope to attend at the convention. But will they? Only time and their post-convention posts will tell. You can follow them on X: Gordon S. Miller and Shawn Bourdo.

Futurama – 11:00am – 11:45am – Ballroom 20

Neither snow nor rain nor cancellations nor pandemics nor Hollywood strikes can keep Futurama from blasting back into existence! Matt Groening, David X. Cohen, Claudia Katz, and Futurama superstars Billy West, John DiMaggio, Lauren Tom, Phil LaMarr, David Herman, and Maurice LaMarche give a live sneak preview of the all-new season premiering July 29 on Hulu. They promise to spill the maximum legal dose of spoilers! Plus: the chance to walk away with debatably precious door prizes!

I have been faithful to this show through all of the iterations. I’m going to be back on the show on Hulu later this month. I’ve also been to probably a half dozen of their panels and they are always the best of the Matt Groening ones.

The Toys That Made Us – 11:15am – 12:15pm – Room 6A

The series The Toys That Made Us reinvigorated love for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Star Wars, Barbie, Transformers, G.I. Joe, Star Trek, and other toys fans have grown nostalgic for. Now, after nearly 5 years since its last episode, Brian Volk-Weiss (Netflix’s The Movies That Made Us, Disney’s Behind the Attraction) and the Nacelle team share an update about the future of the “documentary series about the toys that we all know.”

The History Channel has a good series of shows under the ” . . . That Made Us” umbrella. Toys, Disney, Food, etc. I really enjoyed the nostalgia of the previous episodes. I’m curious what hasn’t been tapped in terms of toys.

Family Guy – 2:00pm – 2:45pm – Ballroom 20

Celebrate 25 years of laughter, satire, and iconic moments with Family Guy! This milestone event will bring together fans, the iconic cast including Alex Borstein, Seth Seth Green, Jennifer Tilly, Gary Cole, and Mike Henry, and executive producers Rich Appel, Alec Sulkin, Steve Callaghan, and Kara Vallow, to honor a quarter-century of hilarity, irreverence, and unforgettable moments in Quahog. Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to the Griffin family’s antics, this is the ultimate event to honor one of television’s most beloved and enduring animated series.

This would be a farewell visit for me. The show was moved out of the Sunday block late last season, a sure sign that Fox is just running out the contract. The ratings are terrible, but the show can still provide a laugh or two. I just want to pay tribute to longevity for a show that I thought was dead and gone after those first two seasons.

World Premiere Screening and Q&A Panel of Prime Video’s Batman: Caped Crusader – 2:45pm – 3:45pm – Room 6BCF

Executive producer Matt Reeves and members of the cast discuss key storylines from the upcoming and highly anticipated Batman: Caped Crusader series and treat you to a world-premiere screening of the new season. The series is a reimagining of the Batman mythology through the visionary lens of executive producers J.J. Abrams, Matt Reeves, and Bruce Timm. Batman: Caped Crusader executive producers also include Ed Brubaker, James Tucker, Daniel Pipski, Rachel Rusch Rich, and Sam Register.

I still hold out hope for the Batman to return strong in the animated field. I’m not as up to speed on this particular series as I should be. This is the perfect opportunity to get some energy going towards it.

Hanna-Barbera: The Recorded History – 4:30pm – 5:30pm PDT – Room 7AB

The legacy, voices, and music of Bill Hanna, Joe Barbera, and their collaborators are celebrated by host Mark Evanier and actor Tim Matheson (Jonny Quest, Space Ghost, Sinbad, Jr., Animal House, Virgin River), cartoon voice performer Katie Leigh, animator and animation historian and Comic-Con special guest Tom Sito, and author Greg Ehrbar (host of The Funtastic World of Hanna & Barbera podcast).

The Hanna-Barbera legacy is the soundtrack of my youth. The voices and music are comfort food for me. I’ve been to similar panels in the past, and they’ve all been highlights of my visits. I’m really going to make an effort to sit in on this one.

Saturday is a wrap.
