As friends and social-media followers know, I spent the weekend at San Diego Comic-Con where upcoming projects, such as the movie Coyote vs. Acme, were promoted to those eager to see them, and past projects, such as the cancelled-hours-before TV series Resident Alien, were celebrated by fans of the material and those who made it.
Buy Knights of the Round Table Blu-rayBut if I was going to buy and watch something this week, I would choose Knights of the Round Table, Richard Thorpe’s adaptation of the Sir Thomas Malory’s Le Morte d’Arthur, which I haven’t seen or know anything about. A story set within the King Arthur mythology is enough to garner my interest, but I am also curious to see how MGM handled their first film shot in CinemaScope.
Other titles out this week that look interesting:
The Phoenician Scheme: The latest Wes Anderson film about a man juggling a complicated business plan while re-establishing the relationship with his daughter would have been my pick, but his films always get released later by the Criterion Collection packed with extras, so that pick will be delayed.
Last of the Red Hot Lovers: Written by Neil Simon, based on his own play, the film tells the story of Barney Cashman (Alan Arkin), a middle-age married man curious about the ’60s sexual revolution before it passes him by.
Chainsaw Man – Season One: I have seen people dressed up as the title character at conventions for years and have no idea what this show or the manga it is based on are about. But it’s clearly popular with some folks and a man with a chainsaw head has me curious.
Thunderbolts*: A group of MCU super-villains unite against their handler who planned to wipe them out in this fun twist on the superhero genre that brings humanity to characters who typically aren’t given much depth in their role as “villains.”
They Died with Their Boots On: Although not a fan of General George Custer, I am a fan of director Raoul Walsh who is enough to sell me on trying a film.
