I love it when an actor is able to reinvent himself. I love it when you think you’ve seen everything you’re gonna see with an artist and then they create something so totally new, so completely beyond what they did before that you can only just stand and gape. I haven’t seen Brawl in Cell Block 99 so I can’t say whether or not I’ll be gaping at Vince Vaughn’s performance or not, but from the early reviews that’s exactly what I’ll be doing.
I’ve never exactly been a fan of Vaughn’s work. I don’t dislike him, but I’ve never been impressed and the fact that he’s a big movie star has always been mystifying to me. So if he pulls off a performance like he’s getting praised for, I’m ready to be impressed.
In Brawl in Cell Block 99 Vaughn plays a former boxer down on his luck who starts working as a drug courier. He gets caught, gets locked up, and then is forced to commit horrible acts of violence. Word is the film is super violent as well but stylized and really interesting. I can’t wait.
Also out this week that looks interesting:
The Mountain Between Us: Idris Elba and Kate Winslet star in this drama about a two strangers who survive a plane crash in the mountains and must learn to trust each other in order to survive. The reviews have been pretty bad, but those actors will make me give it a shot, eventually.
Flatliners: This remake of a not-all-that-good movie from the ’90s has gotten not all that good of reviews.
Killing Gunther: Arnold Schwarzenegger continues his post-governor comeback with another action film that basically went nowhere. It’s about a group of assassins who go after Schwarzenegger’s hitman and create what is supposed to be an action comedy but judging by the reviews actually made a dud.
Manhunt: Unabomber: Sam Worthington and Paul Bettany star in the true story of the real-life FBI agent who pioneered the forensic linguistics that led to the capture of the Unabomber.
