Directed by Stephen Pettit, Legends of the Lost Ark (2026) is a documentary that follows archaeologist and Biblical scholar Dr. Chris McKinny as he goes in search of the final resting place of the Ark of the Covenant. Is it buried underneath the Vatican? Is it in Ethiopia? Was it taken by aliens? Evidence for those “theories” are lacking and scholars believe that if the ark wasn’t destroyed, it would have been buried in Jerusalem or hidden somewhere in the nearby “wilderness,” So Dr. Chris heads to Jerusalem and surrounding locations to explore the three major legends that spring directly from the Bible.

Armed with Biblical texts and non-canonical ancient sources as well as the latest research data, Dr. Chris (thankfully not cosplaying as Indian Jones) sifts through the legends to find any hard evidence that can lead him to the lost ark. We follow Dr. Chris as he explores the locales and breakdowns where each legend has its origin in Biblical and ancient texts. Though some spots remain off limits and inaccessible, Dr. Chris explains why he believes those sites hold further clues to the mystery of the Ark. Along the way, we learn more about its possible Egyptian design, the part Moses played in its creation, how King David brought it back to the temple, and the Ark’s impact on the people of God.

It is filled with high-quality, authentic-looking recreations and reenactments woven between commentary from Biblical scholars, scientists, and historians that provide further context and depth. Legends of the Lost Ark doesn’t pretend it knows where the Ark rests but it does a great job in presenting the real possibilities as well as the harder questions of can the Ark be found? Should it be found? What will it mean if it is actually found? Who knows, maybe the Catholics do have it stashed away. Or maybe the aliens took it back and dropped it off on Kolob? The world may never know but the search continues.
