Scream 7, directed by the original film’s screenwriter Kevin Williamson, has Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) living a new life far away from Woodsboro with her daughter Tatum (Isabel May) and husband Mike (Joel McHale). However, a new Ghostface killer has other plans for all of them, Sidney must put her fears and past trauma behind her as she fights to save her family and end the killing spree once and for all.
Buy Scream 7Look, I have to agree with the masses that this is the worst film in the franchise. I didn’t care for the reveal, the overabundance of AI, and the lack of character development. Some of the characters were simply in the film to die and even seeing Gale and the twins Chad (Mason Gooding) and Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown) again, were not really necessary. Yes, they added spunk but not much else. Their stories were done in either the fifth or sixth film, but I guess the writers loved them so much. And the absence of Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega as Sam and Tara Carpenter was disappointing. For obvious reasons, the entire franchise (just like the Halloween, Friday the 13th, Texas Chain Saw, Chucky ones etc.) now consists of one film too many. I mean I thought the first three were going to be the only ones. It was a trilogy after all.
However, I did appreciate some of the actual suspense in some sequences, the multiple references (being a Scream film mind you), the focus on the mother-daughter dynamic between Campbell (who is fantastic) and May, and the entertaining set pieces/kills that makes this one probably the goriest since the original. Again, Campbell steals the show, and you really feel that she has progressed throughout (with the exception of the sixth movie) and continues to make Sidney Prescott a truly formidable and badass final girl in horror history.
Since they are making an eighth one (I know, why right?), but maybe it will right some of the wrongs of this one and manage to bring something fresh and scary since the original.
