First Man Is the Pick of the Week

Last night, the wife, the daughter, and I sat in our car in the freezing cold at 11:30 at night looking at the Super Blood Wolf Moon. It was awesome. We are big fans of space and astronomy around here. My daughter thought it was the coolest thing ever. I kind of did, too. I am forever blown away by the fact that we’ve sent robots and real, live human beings into space and lived to tell the tale.

Buy First Man on Blu-ray

One such tale is First Man, Damien Chazelle’s movie about Neil Armstrong, the first man to have set foot on the moon. It is an incredible story and I’m a big fan of Chazelle’s filmography. I’m just sad I didn’t get a chance to see it on the big screen. But a top notch Blu-ray should be the next best thing. Read Gordon S. Miller’s rave review.

Also out this week that looks interesting:

Best F(r)iends: Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero (the guys who made the infamous movie The Room) teamed up for this two-volume collection about a homeless drifter who starts working at a morgue owned by a man hiding a mysterious past.

The Hate U Give: Based upon the popular book, this teen drama focuses on a young lady who switches between her poor, black neighborhood and the wealthy, white prep school she attends.

Mickey and Nicky (Criterion Collection): Peter Falk, John Cassavetes, and Ned Beatty star in this drama about a small-time Jewish gangster in trouble with the mob.

4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (Criterion Collection): Romanian film about the final days of Communism in that country. It follows two people who find themselves burrowing down a rabbit hole of unexpected revelations.

Beat the Devil: Twilight Time is releasing this John Huston comedy starring Humphrey Bogart and Peter Lorre from a script by Truman Capote amongst others. I’ve somehow never seen it and I think it’s high time that was remedied.
