Previewing San Diego Comic-Con 2017: Thursday

Good news for readers: there will be more San Diego Comic-Con coverage at Cinema Sentries this year. Now that the programming schedule is starting to be announced, we are going to highlight some of the panels that look the most intriguing and we hope to be attending, although it’s always best to

1. The 18th Annual Animation Show of Shows (10:00am – 11:30am, Room 20) – Ron Diamond (founder and curator of the Animation Show of Shows and Acme Filmworks) is hosting this presentation of work from 11 countries, including Walt Disney Pictures’ and Pixar Animation Studios’ Academy Award winner Piper, which I loved. This is always a great to see those at the forefront of the field.

2. Dark Horse and Adult Swim Present: Go Team Venture! (11:00am – 12:00pm, Room 23ABC) – They had me at “Team Venture.” I have been a huge fan of the show since it debuted, so I am definitely curious to learn about Go Team Venture!: The Art and Making of the Venture Bros., which will be discussed by The Venture Bros. creator Jackson Publick and Ken Plume.

3. Elfquest: An Intimate Conversation with Wendy and Richard Pini (12:00pm – 1:00pm, Neil Morgan Auditorium, San Diego Central Library) – Around since the ’70s, yet I only just started reading them last year thanks to Dark Horse’s Complete Elfquest series and have enjoyed them so I am very curious to learn more about them

4. 1987: Greatest Geek Year Ever (3:00pm – 4:00pm, Room 5AB) – Although the moderator’s schtick can be a bit grating, these guys always put on an entertaining panel talking about the great (or are they?) movies of a particular year.

5. BritBox’s Classic Doctor Who Panel with Lost Episode Preview and Q&A (5:00pm – 5:50pm, Indigo Ballroom, Hilton San Diego Bayfront) – I started watching Who with Tom Baker reruns so am very curious to hear for the first time in person stories from Peter Davison (the Fifth Doctor), Colin Baker (the Sixth Doctor), and Sophie Aldred (Ace). A sneak peek at a newly reconstructed lost episode of the Second Doctor story “The Wheel in Space” is a bonus.

6. 25 Years of Bob the Angry Flower (5:30pm – 6:30pm, Room 4) – I don’t know creator Stephen Notley or his work, but have seen his booth at many a convention and feel it is incumbent to tip my hat to a man who has worked in the trenches for so long and learn what has driven him to achieve this milestone.

7. Adam West Celebration (7:00pm – 8:00pm, Room 6DE) – It will be good to pay tribute to the man who entertained so many for all these years. More so than the celebrities, I am curious to hear the regular folk sing his praises.
