Monk: Season Four Blu-ray Review: Pretty Entertaining

Despite the fact that season four of Monk (2002-2009) is not as strong as season three (arguably the best of the series), and many episodes are better than others, there are still enough world-building character moments, humor and genuine emotion, and many amazing guest stars to warrant this season as a worthy one.

Buy Monk: Season Four Blu-ray

Some of my favorite episodes include “Mr. Monk Goes Home Again,” where the brilliant John Turturro comes back as Adrian’s (Tony Shalhoub) even more phobic brother Ambrose, which also provides insight into their complicated family history. “Mr. Monk Stays in Bed” sees Natalie (the charming and always welcome Traylor Howard) take action after Adrian gets sick. She is allowed to do more than just be his assistant/nurse. “Mr. Monk Gets Drunk” where Shalhoub shows off some amazing off-character chops. “Mr. Monk Bumps His Head” where Adrian interacts with other characters besides Natalie, Disher (Jason Gray-Stanford), and Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine). There’s a funny subplot involving the great Laurie Metcalf as a wacky woman who believes Adrian her husband. And the best episode of the season is a great take on 12 Angry Men called “Mr. Monk Goes to Jury Duty” where Adrian puts his skills to very good use (and annoying 11 other jurors).

Again, this season is fairly routine, but episodes do offer good mysteries, solid character beats, including one that involves Stottlemeyer and his wife (the late, underrated Glenne Headly) that brings some realism into the mix. Other guest stars include Jason Alexander, Jeffrey Donovan, Jon Favreau, Wings Hauser, DJ Qualls, and Malcolm McDowell. So, overall, this fourth season is pretty entertaining. See you for season five!
