Films about couples on the brink of losing their relationship are nothing new. We go to the theater to see if they will make it out alive and stay together because we hope in turn our own relationships will make it out alive. But if you are looking for a film to reinvigorate your relationship with your significant other, The One I Love is not that film.
The One I Love starts as a film about Ethan (Mark Duplass) and Sophie (Elizabeth Moss), a couple trying to save what is left of their marriage after Ethan has an affair. Their therapist (Ted Danson) recommends Ethan and Sophie get away for the weekend to an estate he knows. On their first night there, Ethan and Sophie begin to rediscover what they think is themselves, but actually it is so much more.
I know that plot summary sounds like a typical couple’s film, but I assure it is not. I cannot say much more without spoiling the film. What I can say is sometimes what we project onto others becomes reality.
The One I Love took a while to sink in for me. I was left a bit dizzy at the end but I liked it. This film will definitely leave a lot of people scratching their heads, but for me that makes the film more appealing. Not every film is going to be for everyone. The movie is R for language, some sexuality, and drug use because they smoke a joint.
The Blu-ray doesn’t come with a lot of extras. There is an optional commentary track as well as a short montage that visually explains how some of the effects were done.
