“Well, nobody’s perfect!!
So says the nebbish Osgood to Jerry when he learns that he’s really a man who has been dressing as a woman in order to avoid getting killed by some gangsters in Billy Wilder’s classic comedy Some Like It Hot. It is a perfect line, one of the all-time great final lines of any movie. It is hilariously funny. It perfectly resolves that relationship. And it is surprisingly modern in its acceptance of what the character perceives as an alternative lifestyle.
Buy Some Like It Hot 4K UHDThe rest of the movie is great too. Jerry, of course, is played by Jack Lemmon, and his partner is played by Tony Curtis. Together, they join an all-girl’s band to get away from some gangsters (led by George Raft) after they accidentally witness a murder. These two red-blooded boys have to learn to act like women while also resisting their natural urge to flirt with the rest of the women in the band. One of whom is played by Marilyn Monroe.
But I don’t need to tell you about the plot. Some Like It Hot is a beloved classic. The Criterion Collection is releasing it with all their usual bells and whistles and this time in 4K UHD. I can’t wait to purchase it.
Also out this week that looks interesting:
The Long Kiss Goodnight 4K UHD: Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson star in the Shane Black-scripted thriller that finds Davis playing a covert op who sometime in the past was nearly killed, giving her amnesia. She’s been living the life of a housewife ever since, but a bump on the head begins to bring her secret identity to the forefront just as some killers are on her tail. It has been a long while since I watched this but I remember it being a lot of fun. Arrow Video has the release. Read Kent Conrad’s review.

I’ve never heard of any of them but I trust Radiance and look forward to watching them. The three films are Police Python 357, Série Noire, and Choice of Arms. Read Steve Geise’s review.
