Repo Man Is the Pick of the Week

Cinema Sentries

Alex Cox’s Repo Man is one of those films I’d heard about for years. I’d had it on my to-watch list for ages. But for one reason or another, I kept putting it off. Then a few months ago, I finally sat down with it and wondered why it took me so long. It is a punk-rock movie with that genre’s DIY aesthetic and a plot about a young down-and-out kid (Emilio Estevez) who gets a job as a repo man and starts working with a seasoned pro (Harry Dean Stanton). They have some crazy adventures together and get involved with the C.I.A., aliens, and more. It is a crazy, super-fun ride.

Buy Repo Man (The Criterion Collection) 4K UHD

The Criterion Collection has previously released the film in Blu-ray but now they’ve upgraded it to 4K UHD and early reviews say it is well worth the upgrade. All of the extras are ported over from the original Blu-ray release. They include an audio commentary, various interviews, and trailers.

Also out this week that looks interesting

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet: Tim Burton’s adaptation of the Steven Sondheim musical is beloved by many. I remember liking it but not loving it at the time, but I feel like I should revisit it. Paramount Home Media is giving it a 4K upgrade.

Chains of Gold: This mostly-forgotten John Travolta vehicle finds him playing a social worker out to help a fallen teen (Joey Lawrence) who has gotten tangled up with a crack-dealing gang.

Naughty Girl: Brigitte Bardot stars in this Roger Vadim-scripted comedy about a nightclub entertainer who learns too late that the boss’ daughter he has agreed to take care of is, well, played by Brigitte Bardot.
