If you are like me and are still in mourning for the great Gene Hackman, then the Criterion Collection has the prescription for what ails ya. Night Moves is one of the all-time great 1970s detective movies. Hackman plays Harry Moseby, a cut-rate private eye sent to Florida on what he thinks is a routine case, but it turns into something much, much more. The movie is much more than your standard private-eye flick. The case is essentially window dressing for a case study of Moseby and America during the tumultuous decade. Criterion has previously released the film on Blu-ray but they are giving it a 4K upgrade, adding in some new extras and retaining all of their old extras.
Buy Night Moves (Criterion Collection) Blu-rayThe Brutalist 4K UHD: Adrian Brody, Felicity Jones, and Guy Pearce star in this award-winning drama about a genius architect who flees wartime Europe and settles in America.
Delicatessen 4K UHD: Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro’s debut film is a wildly inventive, hilarious romance, with cannibals. You can read my full review.
The 10th Victim: In the near future, society’s lust for violence is satiated by the Big Hunt, in which participants are allowed to hunt each other for entertainment. It features ten rounds, five in which they are the hunters, and five where they are hunted. Marcello Mastroianni and Ursula Andress portray the top two assassins in the game and when they are pitted against each other, they will either kill each other or fall in love.
Venom 4K UHD: A rather silly thriller that finds Klaus Kinsky and Oliver Reed kidnapping a young boy only to find the police, the boy’s grandfather (Sterling Hayden), and a deadly snake trying to stop them. You can read my full review.
An Amorous Woman of Tang Dynasty: 88 Films present this Chinese film about a young woman who becomes a Taoist Priestess in order to avoid society’s traditional roles for women. Complications ensue.
Star Trek: Lower Decks – The Complete Series: This animated series plays a comedic tribute to all the hard-working, and usually unseen, crew members in the Star Trek universe.
Shaw Brothers Classics: Vol. Six: I will always support more Shaw Brothers films getting a Blu-ray release. This set includes the following: Swordswomen Three, The Twelve Gold Medallions, The Black Enforcer, Duel for Gold, Finger of Doom, Na Cha and the Seven Devils, Shadow Girl, Swordsman at Large, The Black Tavern, The Young Avenger, and Crazy Nuts of Kung Fu
Night of the Creeps 4K UHD: A very silly 1980s horror/comedy that pays homage to the creature features of the 1950s. I previously reviewed a Blu-ray release.
Fear in the Philippines: The Complete Blood Island Films: Philippine filmmakers Eddie Romero and Gerry de Leon made a bunch of low-budget, graphically violent, and gonzo films through the 1960s. Severin Films has bundled four of them up in this fun-looking set. The four films are: Terror is a Man, Brides of Blood, Mad Doctor for Blood, and Beat of Blood.
Deadly Obsession: The Films of Bill Reeves: Reeves was an underground filmmaker who made zero-budget movies that never found distribution outside of his hometown of Lebanon, Indiana. I can’t imagine any of these ten films are any good but I love that some dude’s homemade movies are getting a Blu-ray release and real distribution, Maybe someday, the series of films me and my college buddies made will get a real release.
