Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas 4K UHD Is the Pick of the Week

Terry Gilliam is one of the most creative, ingenious, and equally reviled filmmakers of our time. He creates world full of gonzo and often unsettling images, some of them that you just can’t get out of your mind.

Buy Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (The Criterion Collection) 4K UHD

Although I have heard but not seen it, I think that his 1998 adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s novel, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, looks like his wildest film. I saw clips and trailers, and both Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro seem to embody their characters of Raoul Duke and Dr. Gonzo, going on the road trip from hell, filled with drugs and frightening savagery. Again, I haven’t seen it, but it looks like a wild and disturbing trip down the cinematic rabbit hole, one that actual seems right up my wheelhouse.

Making its 4K UHD debut this week, it seems to have the same stacked supplements as the Blu-ray, which include three audio commentaries: one with Gilliam, one with actors Depp and Del Toro and producer Laila Nabulsi, and one with author Hunter S. Thompson; deleted scenes, with optional commentary by Gilliam; program about the controversy over the screenwriting credit; excerpt from a 1996 Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas audio recording featuring filmmaker Jim Jarmusch and actor Maury Chaykin; Hunter Goes to Hollywood, a short documentary; and much more!

If you have the Blu-ray and want to upgrade to 4K or love Gilliam’s cinema as a whole, then this release should be a damn fine addition to your collection.
