I also appreciate cinematic stories about the relationships between humans and wildlife, where our bonds are much stronger than we actually realize. Seeing 2022’s All That Breathes, by acclaimed filmmaker Shaunak Sen, makes the human/animal connection unbearably important, especially during disastrous times.
Buy All That Breathes (Janus Contemporaries) Blu-rayThe documentary looks at brothers Mohammad Saud and Nadeem Shehzad (and their cousin Salik Rehman) in New Delhi, as they tirelessly attempt to save many beautiful black kites that have fallen from the sky due to extreme polluting air. Since the doc’s release, they have rescued more than 20,000 kites.
This is a really profound, lyrical film that isn’t just about man’s devotion to nature; it’s about the social unrest and troubling urban decay around it. The film’s often stunning imagery isn’t there just because; it’s there to signify that there can still be beauty in often increasing ugliness.
Of course, you have to wonder why the brothers only want to save kites when there also other animals who need help. However, you have to realize that every living thing is worth saving, regardless of whether you think it’s important or not. I think that’s the overall message to this incredible watch.
Special features include new interview with Sen; and a trailer. There’s also an essay by writer Michael Joshua Rowin.
