The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill Blu-ray Review: One of the Greatest Nature Documentaries of All-time

There is a certain kind of relationship between humans and animals that can’t be explained, but why should it be? The bond between humans and animals is much more authentic and life-affirming than one between humans. There is understanding, non-judgment, and instant connection that exists between different species. Filmmaker Judy Irving’s classic and award-winning 2003 documentary The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill definitely shows us just that.

Mark Bittner is a homeless musician (now author) whose purpose is reexamined when he falls in love with a flock of South American parrots in San Francisco’s famed Telegraph Hill. Through his music and attentive care, his passion and dedication towards these beautiful creatures grows as he discovers their unique personalities and individual characteristics. He also makes an amazing case for humans to reconsider the importance of human-animal relationships. However, as he is forced to leave them, he worries about their fates.

Several years ago, I checked out this incredible film on DVD and was immediately impressed and moved by it. But I forgot about it for years. But now, having the new Blu-ray (courtesy of Kino), I was able completely fall in love with it all over again. I really grew attached to Bittner (now 73), who is a very interesting person; one whose eccentricities give way to his genuine compassion and decency. He really cares about and is willing to risk his sanity for these parrots he has involved himself with. You really understand his love for these creatures and feel for him and them when circumstances and the grim realities of life unfortunately pay a visit.

Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill does what a documentary is supposed to do. It makes you laugh, cry, and really think about the world around you and the animals that inhabit it. It also makes you appreciate how intelligent and evolved animals are. They are obviously much smarter and more adaptable than we are, and Bittner understands and never questions that. The film (that also has a surprise ending) is a winner as far as I’m concerned. It is considered to be one of the greatest nature documentaries of all-time, and rightly so.

The Blu-ray has an amazing brand-new 4K restoration and plenty of special features, which include an archival commentary by Bittner; updates; outtakes; deleted scenes; music videos; short films; trailers; and an interview with Bittner and Irving.
