Presumably due to the Fourth of July weekend, where presumably all God-fearing, patriotic Americans will be spending their hard-earned money blowing stuff up instead of buying movie discs, this week’s selection is pretty sparse. Luckily, there is a 50% off Criterion sale at Barnes and Noble and Amazon. and a nice new 4K UHD Criterion disc for all you American-hating liberals to purchase. Then you can sit inside your lonely, darkened homes watching Hollywood nonsense while the rest of us good, patriotic Americans can celebrate our freedoms outside in the stifling heat, getting bitten by mosquitoes.
Sorry, I don’t know what happened to me there. I started off pondering why there were so few discs coming out this week and then ran screaming into a silly little political satire.
Buy The Big Heat The Criterion Collection 4K UHDThe Big Heat is one of the all-time great film noirs. Glenn Ford stars as a good cop investigating the suspicious suicide of a fellow police officer who is drawn deeper and deeper into a world of corruption, lust, and violence. Gloria Grahame is the femme fatale, and Lee Marvin is an extraordinarily violent gangster. The Criterion Collection has given it a new 4K UHD upgrade and loaded it with extras, including new commentaries and archival interviews.
Also out this week that looks interesting:
Warfare 4K UHD: Alex Garland and ex-Navy SEAL Ray Mendoza directed this realistic portrayal of a based-on-a-true-story of a SEAL team pinned down inside a house in Iraq.
Death of a Unicorn: Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd star in this horror film about two people who accidentally kill a unicorn in an auto accident. They take it to his billionaire boss’s house, and he tries to exploit the creature’s restorative powers. Presumably, (probably incredibly violent) horror ensues.
Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut 4K UHD: Oliver Stone’s biopic of Alexander the Great got terrible reviews upon release. Stone has since gone back and recut the film several times. The last time he actually removed some scenes, he had previously added back in. I haven’t seen any of them, but I’ve heard The Final Cut is actually pretty good.
