WonderCon's second day of programming on Saturday March 30 offers an eclectic mix of panels. My highlights are below. Their entire listing is available on their website
The Music That Makes You Scream
10:30am - 11:30am - Room 208
Ever question why your spine tingles when watching a scary scene? Join film and television composers as they discuss the art of composing for one of the most demanding genres-horror! Tyler Bates (Day of the Dead, Halloween II), Anton Sanko (The Possession, Nurse 3-D), Frederik Wiedmann (Mirrors 2, Hostel III), and Dino Meneghin (Teen Wolf) discuss the process of scoring for screams and how they manage to sleep at night. Moderating are Anne Cecere (BMI's director of film & TV relations) and White Bear PR founder Chandler Poling. Q&A to follow with special giveaways to attendees.
I don't yet have an idea where I am going yet during this next block and will likely not decide until that morning because I enjoy hearing stories from the guys who've long been in the trenches as much as I do checking out the new projects.
That '70s Panel
11:30am - 12:30pm - Room 203
A look at comics in what some call the Bronze Age...a time of massive change within in the industry. What made that era unique from comics that came before and after? Perhaps we'll learn as Mark Evanier (Groo the Wanderer) chats with Marv Wolfman (Tomb of Dracula), J. M. DeMatteis (Justice League), Len Wein (Swamp Thing), and Brent Anderson (Astro City).
Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures
11:30am - 12:30pm - Arena
Pacific Rim with director Guillermo del Toro and New Line Cinema's The Conjuring with director James Wan.
12:00pm - 1:00pm - Room 300AB
What could make WonderCon Anaheim 2013 even more wonderful? How about a totally mathematical Adventure Time panel with some behind-the-scenes superstars? Find out what's in store for our heroes Finn and Jake this season with a peek at how the show comes to life, exclusive clips, and a Q&A with the audience. So come on, grab your friends!
I discovered Scott Shaw!'s hysterical panel at last year's San Diego Comic-Con when shut out of other panels as was so glad I did because it was one of the funniest things I've ever seen at a convention. Highly recommended.
Oddball Comics Live: Sex, Drugs, and Rock 'n Roll!
1:30pm - 2:30pm - Room 213
Award-winning cartoonist Scott Shaw! (Annoying Orange, Simpsons Comics, Sonic The Hedgehog, Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew!, The Flintstones) invades WonderCon Anaheim with an extra-lurid, extra-funny new edition of his popular show featuring "the craziest comic books ever published" -- including those notorious "crotch-centric" covers from issues of Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane! Even if you've seen some of these comic book covers many times before, when you see them blown up to the size of the side of a barn, you'll be amazed and delighted at the unbelievably hilarious hidden-in-plain-sight imagery that's revealed! See why Stan Lee says, "Wow, True Believers, I thought I'd seen it all, but Scott Shaw!'s hysterically hilarious Oddball Comics Live is the wildest, wackiest exposé of some of the craziest comic books I've ever seen! Or, to put it mildly, Scott's outrageous opuses are a blast!"
Though I won't be attending, the following panel seemed an unusually important one that is deserving of attention.
All Shapes and Sizes Welcome
2:00pm - 3:00pm - Room 210A
Join Leah Cevoli (Robot Chicken), Miracle Laurie (Dollhouse), Adrianne Curry (Adrianne Curry's SuperFans), Helenna Santos Levy (founder, MsInTheBiz.com), Amber Krzys (founder, BodyHeart.com), and Lynn Chen (founder, www.theActorsDiet.com) as these outspoken actresses, models, writers, and entrepreneurs will share openly their own journey with body image, eating disorders, and the road to recovery and self-love. The panel will discuss healthy lifestyles and acceptance for women of all shapes and sizes in the entertainment industry, while inspiring others to get out there and live their best life. Moderated by Leah Cevoli.
It's surprising that Marvel isn't going to have a presence at WonderCon this year, but there is plenty of DC, including the following:
DC Comics: The New 52
3:00pm - 4:00pm - Room 300AB
DC Comics-The New 52 is one of the most exciting events in the industry's history! And we're not done making news by a long shot! Come by and be a part of history as we discuss what's coming next in this exciting time for DC Entertainment!
I've long heard the name ElfQuest but have never read the comics. Though I know nothing about it, I can't help but be impressed by any project that has a great history.
ElfQuest 35th Anniversary
6:30pm - 7:30pm - Room 213
Join Wendy Pini (the "Elf Mom" herself), and Stephanie Thorpe and Paula Rhodes (the producers who recently acquired the film/TV rights to this epic fantasy series) for this panel celebrating 35 years of this legendary comic. They'll engage in a lively discussion of ElfQuest's generation-spanning past and present, with some exciting hints of what's to come. EQ cosplay encouraged; you never know what you could win!
There are a couple of TV previews airing Saturday night. While it's not fair to judge a show before seeing it, Hannibal Lecter: The Early Days sounds like a terrible idea . The following miniseries sounds like it has greater potential.
Under the Dome Sneak Peek and Q&A
7:00pm - 8:00pm - Room 300AB
Get a first look inside the Dome from the stars and creative minds of CBS's highly anticipated summer series at a special WonderCon Anaheim appearance. Stars Dean Norris (Breaking Bad) and Rachelle Lefevre (Twilight) along with executive producers Neal Baer (Law & Order: SVU), Brian K. Vaughan (Lost), and Jack Bender (Lost), discuss the new series based on Stephen King's bestselling novel Under The Dome. The series, produced by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Television, is the story of a small town that is suddenly and inexplicably sealed off from the rest of the world by an enormous transparent dome. The town's inhabitants must deal with surviving the post-apocalyptic conditions while searching for answers to what this barrier is, where it came from and if and when it will go away. Join us as the cast and executive producers share exclusive footage followed by a panel discussion.
