With Comic Con International: San Diego 2011 in full swing, I wanted to this week's selection for the Saturday Public Domain Movie to be one that would be right at home if it was screened there and could also help pass the time for those waiting in line with nothing to do because they've read all their comics and magnas.  It's also a fun choice for anyone not in San Diego.

Attack of the Monsters is the English-dubbed version of Gamera vs. Guiron, the fifth movie in the Japanese kaiju series starring Gamera, the giant, flying turtle. In this adventure, two young boys, Akio and Tom, discover a spaceship has landed near their home. Naturally, the boys enter the ship and it takes them to another planet directly opposite the Earth on the other side of the sun, which explains how it's remained undetected.

Once there, two monsters fight: Space Gyaos, which was the pterodactyl costume of Gyaos from Gamera vs. Gyaos painted silver by the crew because they didn't have time to create a new monster, and Guiron, a wild creature whose head resembles a knife and features other surprises. The boys discover two people on the planet, but don't known that they are cannibals who plan to eat the boys' brains and go to Earth. Gamera heads to the planet to rescue the boys but has to defeat Guiron first.

For those who enjoy watching men in rubber suits wrestling around, Attack of the Monsters is a wonderful bit of silliness, made all the more odd by the English dub.
