Thanks for joining us for the debut of our new feature, "Friday Night Videos," where we plan to showcase interesting videos for your viewing pleasure, just as the late-night music video series did that ran on NBC from 1983 to 2002 whose name we are using.
First up is this clip from the Stan Winston Studio Archives. The late Stan Winston is a Hollywood legend. He was a visual effects supervisor and makeup artist with an impressive list of movie titles on his resume. He was also the receipient of multiple Academy Award wins in the Visual Effects category leading the teams responsible for director James Cameron's Aliens and Terminator 2: Judgement Day, for which he also won in the Makeup category; and Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park.
The outstanding work of Winston et al. on Jurassic Park is what makes the film so memorable. As seen in the awesome video below, the full-size T-Rex animatronic robot and some of the crew that made it operational rehearse some moves before the "Main Road Attack" sequence.
Nowadays, the T-Rex would likely be brought to life by computer graphics, but the practical effects on display here help foster an air of believability that serves the film better in the long run.
Though no longer with us, Stan Winston continues to be an inspiration. Not only due to his body of work but also through the Stan Winston School of Character Arts, an educational media company dedicated to teaching the art and science of character creation.
