Top 5 Animated Voice Acting Roles
With Jesse Eisenberg starring as the lead vocal talent in 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment’s new release in the animation world Rio (hitting Blu-ray and DVD on August 4), let’s take a look back at other notable celebrities who stepped into the animated realm for a role. Out of a large selection of great actors we think the top five performances are below:
George Clooney – Fantastic Mr. Fox
George Clooney enters the animation world as the Fantastic Mr. Fox in Wes Anderson’s animated adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic book. Fantastic Mr. Fox was a huge success thanks to the visionary direction of Anderson and the star-studded voice cast of not only Clooney but also Meryl Streep, Owen Wilson, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray and Willem Dafoe. Mr. Fox has to put his wild days behind him and in order to do that he has to pull off one last raid at three of the most dangerous farms to break into displaying a great tale about crossing the of family responsibilities.
Ben Stiller – Madagascar
Ben Stiller stars in his first major role in animation as Alex the lion. Madagascar tells the story of a group of zoo animals who escape from the Central Park Zoo and end up stranded in Madagascar and struggle to find their way in their natural environment. An instant classic in the animation genre with its who’s who list of voide actors including Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, Jada Pinkett Smith, Sacha Baron Cohen and Andy Richter, Madagascar continues to make waves with its TV specials, theatrical releases and merchandise.
Jack Black - Kung Fu Panda
Jack Black stars in this epic tale of never giving up as Po, a panda that finds out he has been chosen as the next “Dragon Warrior.” Yet there’s a problem—he has absolutely no experience in martial arts and must protect everyone from the leopard Tai Lung. Black leads this blockbuster with the top-notch supporting cast of Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Seth Rogen, Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu, David Cross, James Hong, Dan Fogler, Michael Clarke Duncan and Black’s faithful band mate Kyle Gass of Tenacious D. The movie is now a full-fledged series with a sequel released this year.
Mike Myers – Shrek
Arguably one of the greatest animated characters to have hit the big screen, Mike Myers plays Shrek a green monster that must save a princess from a dragon, with the help of a very annoying donkey, from a very evil and Napoleonic king or else he loses his swamp. Shrek set the tone for many animated films that followed making it arguably one of the most successful animated films to date with a total of four theatrical movies in the Shrek series. An outstanding cast of Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and Vincent Cassel star in this original animation blockbuster hit.
Bruce Willis – Over the Hedge
Bruce Willis takes time from his typical hard-core action films and hits the animation world playing a scheming raccoon named RJ. RJ fools an odd group of forest creatures into helping him repay a food debt by invading the new suburban sprawl that took over while they were hibernating. The film also has an all-star cast of acting veterans and newcomers with Steve Carell, singer Avril Lavigne, Garry Shandling, Wanda Sykes, William Shatner, Nick Nolte, and Eugene Levy.
