Cinema Sentries and Warner Home Video have teamed up to give one lucky reader the opportunity to win The Smurfs Holiday Celebration on DVD.
Before making their debut as computer-generated characters at movie theaters this summer, Belgian artist Peyo's The Smurfs started as comic strip characters in 1958. They became a pop-culture hit in North America with the success of their Saturday morning cartoon series that aired on NBC from 1981 to 1990. It can still be found on the cartoon cable channel Boomerang. The Smurfs was so popular during its initial run NBC also ran a number of primetime specials. The two Christmas-themed specials are collected on this disc.
The Smurfs' Christmas Special premiered in 1982 and finds the evil Gargamel acting like a Grinch when he works with a stranger to ruin the Smurfs' Christmas by destroying their village. Their last special, 'Tis the Season to Be Smurfy, debuted in 1987. Sassette Smurf learns about the true meaning of Christmas when the Smurfs help out an elderly couple who don't have the means to celebrate after being the victims of a robbery.
